How is the self illusion studied?
Seeing through the self illusion is not only an experience in meditation but also in everyday life.
In the inquiry of the self illusion you don’t go “inward”. You search for the self in direct experience. With the five senses.
It is important to relate to direct experience. Not to thoughts, meditative insights, conclusions or assumptions. You want to see the truth directly!
Direct experience is everything you experience with your five senses.
What can you see right now?
What can you hear right now?
What can you smell, taste right now?
What sensations of touch can you feel right now?
Quite simply.
That is the life that your body goes through.
Everything else is a story of the mind.
And it is in this direct experience that you seek the self/you.
Inquiry into the self illusion
Do this: make yourself a cup of tea or coffee. Sit in a chair in your kitchen. Let your eyes wander around the room and out of the window. Drink the tea or coffee. And describe: what can you see right now? What can you hear right now? What can you smell or taste right now? What tactile sensations can you feel right now?
