October 3rd is a public holiday in Germany (Day of German Unity) and traditionally this is the day on which the Allrad Stammtisch meets in a sandpit. So I’ll be offline from Wednesday to Sunday 🙂 Who else has plans for the long weekend?

    Dear Adrienne!

    > Where do thoughts come from?
    >> No idea. They suddenly appear, as the sounds and the smells. There is a feeling that they are perceived/noticed first in a non-verbal form, and then they are somehow put into words – all done very quickly and effortlessly. The thoughts immediately pull away attention to their content, like a giant magnet, in a way that the content takes over from consciously registering that a thought has just appeared. When the thought/thought train is gone, the mind registers that there were thoughts – in retrospect. Thoughts are rarely caught red-handed, in the act.

Yes, this is true. You can´t catch thoughts red-handed. They are past when they were recognised. Is there a difference between thoughts and mind? What is the mind?

    > Where do thoughts go?
    >> They just evaporate and disappear from the mind. If the mind wants to keep hold of a thought, it will keep repeating it again and again, until it is dropped. Sometimes thoughts can be felt “under the surface” so to speak – not conscious enough to be put into words, but conscious enough to generate sensations in the body (feelings).

    Whom is a thought conscious?

    > Can you eliminate a thought once it has appeared?
    >> There seems to be something that can stop an especially distressing thought, or at least not go down the route the thought is pointing to. This seeming ability was developed in the past year. But there is no-one doing it. And it doesn’t always work.<

    What is that something?

Hallo Suzana!

Traue deiner Wahrnehmung. Es werden Gedanken und Körperempfindungen da sein. Glaube nichts, was Gedanken sagen. Schau hin.

    Hi Deniz!

    Here it comes:

📌 What was it like when you saw through the self illusion? Did you have a shift?

📌 Take a mug or cup and place it in front of you on the table.
Look at it as you would normally look at something. Use your senses as you normally would.

    1. What do you see? What is the pure sensory information? What is just seen? Write it down.
    2. What can you not see?
    3. What about three-dimensionality? Can you see it? Does it look round? What does the opening look like without interpretation? Write it down.
    4. What is added by thoughts? Write that down too.

📌 Next we will look at thoughts. Find out how thinking works.

Look at your thoughts directly. Sit comfortably, relax and just let the thoughts run. Here are some questions, take 5 minutes for each one. You don’t have to do the exercise all at once. Maybe you already know this exercise. Do it anyway. ☺

Please number the answers according to the questions so that I know what your answers refer to.

    1. Where do the thoughts come from and where do they go? Wait curiously for the next thought and see.
    2. Can you predict what thought will come next?
    3. Can you prevent it from appearing if you don’t like it?
    4. Can you eliminate a thought once it has appeared?
    5. Can you make the decision NOT to think?
    6. Decide to think a particular thought. What happens if you look carefully?
    7. Is the thought „I“ a special kind of thought that can think other thoughts? Or does it come from the same place as the other thoughts?
    8. What can thoughts do?
    9. Can thoughts perceive anything?
    10. Do you find someone who thinks, or does it all happen by itself, without control by a thinker?

📌 Today you will look at what memories and future plans actually are.
    1. What is the memory made of?
    2. When does the memory appear?
    3. What exactly is the difference between a „general“ thought and a „memory thought“?
    4. What exactly shows that a „memory thought“ refers to something that has happened?

Then look at a thought about the future.
    5. What does the future thought consist of?
    6. What is the ‚future thought‘ made of?
    7. When does the future thought appear?
    8. What exactly is the difference between a ‚general thought‘ and a ‚future thought‘?
    9. From what exactly can it be inferred that the ‚future thought‘ refers to something that will happen?
    10. Now let us compare a thought of the past with a thought of the future.
    11. What exactly is the difference between thoughts about the past and the future?
    12. If there is a difference, how is this difference recognised?

Look at what actually happens and not what thoughts tell you.

    📌
What actually happens when a choice is made and a decision is made? (The answer is not, there is no I to choose).

Sit back inside and just observe. How do you choose what to wear in the morning? What happens when you decide what to eat and drink for lunch? Where you go? Observe these small everyday situations and describe exactly what happens.

Then take more complex decisions you make throughout the day. Find the exact moment when the decision is made.

How does „making a decision“ work?

    📌
    ### Thoughts
Often what we think seems as real as the table we are sitting at. When a good film is playing in our mind’s cinema, we forget, as in every good film, that the contents of thoughts are not actually there as things.

    Watch it once:

    Close your eyes.

Imagine an apple, in all its details. What colour is the skin, does it have spots, rotten spots, is the stem still attached?

Take the apple in your hand, feel its weight. Smell it, what does it smell like?

Then take a knife and cut it open.

Feel the slightly sticky fruit juice on your fingers.

Put a piece in your mouth – how does the apple taste? Is it firm to the bite or rather mealy?

    Open your eyes.

Where is the rest of the apple?

    ### Body sensations
Body sensations are often mistaken for something they are not. For example
a body sensation can feel like it is the self.

You may find it difficult to work with sensations because they seem unpleasant.

    Take a closer look.

Pinch yourself so that there is a little pain and feel the body sensation. You can also
You can also sit on something that causes slight pain.

    Again, feel the body sensation.

    1. Is the sensation the direct experience of *pain* or the direct experience of a body sensation?
    2. What in the pure sensation itself is *pain* or conveys that it *is* painful?
    3. Is the bodily sensation itself *pleasant* or *unpleasant*?
    4. Does the bodily sensation have any properties?
    5. Does the body sensation itself convey any information?
    6. Thoughts about *pain* occur. Can the *pain* itself be found?
    7. Is there a direct experience of *pain*?
    8. Is a thought aware of a sensation?
    9. Is sensation aware of a thought?
    10. Is a thought aware of another thought?

    📌
The body is a fascinating experience. Often the feeling of „I“ is connected to the body. Let’s look at what can be found when we explore the feeling of the body.

Sit or lie down for about 15 minutes.

Pay attention only to the pure sensations, without relying on thoughts or mental images.

    1. Can you tell how big the body is?
    2. Does the body have a weight or girth?
    3. Does your body have a shape or form in the current experience?
    4. Is there a boundary between the body and clothing?
    5. Is there a boundary between the body and the chair?
    6. How many toes do you have?
    7. Are you male or female?
    8. Do you have a name?
    9. Is there an inside or outside? If there is an inside – inside of what exactly?
    10. If there is an outside, the outside of what exactly?
    11. Where is the I to be found in the body?
    12. What does the word/designation ‚body‘ actually refer to?
    13. Are you missing anything when you experience yourself like this?

    📌
Check back to see if you feel an I somewhere….

    Do you feel, „I see, I hear….?

Is there a feeling at this moment, „I am reading“ – or is it simply being read?

Do you mostly experience, „I stand, I walk, I shower….?“

    Do you think?

Do you choose or/and decide what should be done?

Do you feel, „I am responsible for…?“

    Are you the body?

Take your time with this 🙂

    Hi Adrienne!
    Here is the exercise:

Watch the thought process once from the 1st row. Look at your thoughts directly.

Sit down comfortably, relax and let your thoughts run. Now follow some questions, take 5 minutes for each one. You do not need to do the exercise all at once.

Please quote the questions one by one so I know what your answers refer to.

Where do the thoughts come from and go to? Wait curiously for the next thought and see.

Can you predict what thought will come next? Can you prevent it from appearing if you don’t like it? Can you eliminate a thought once it has appeared?

Can you make the decision NOT to think?

Decide to think a particular thought. What happens when you look closely at it?

Is the thought „I“ a special kind of thought that can think other thoughts? Or does it come from the same place as the other thoughts?

Think of a number between 1 and 100. Do you know what number comes before it appears?

Do you find someone thinking, or does it all happen by itself, without control by a thinker?

    Dear Adrienne!

This is great. Look where it is not so obvious. Is there something left, where the self is hiding?

    Dear Adrienne!

If the sense of self is still there, but cannot be localized when you look for it, you have already come a long way.
Now it is a matter of repeatedly looking where the sense of self appears.
Is there an instance that notices that no self can be found?
Focus your attention on the sense of self. Where does it seem to be perceived?
The sense of self is the object of investigation and you are looking at it directly. Is there really a self to be found there?
Can you perceive a sense of self right now?
If so, where can you find it?
Focus your attention on the sense of self.
If the search is frustrating because you can’t find anything, you know that you are really looking.

Dear Adrienne! I read your guide at LU. You kept taking breaks because you weren’t feeling well and did trauma work. How are you doing now? How do you feel?
